Desalination techniques have been developed to allow greater access to fresh water in areas that have historically had limited access.
The desalination process turns salt water into fresh water and will allow the irrigation of crops to continue without making a harmful impact on the water supply. Even though most of farmers who were interviewed accepted the notion climate change was happening; just a small segment believed that it was human related. Few farmers thought that the issue of climate change was significant enough to diminish what was causing it.
Some of the farmers were worried that a suggested carbon pollution reduction plan would incorporate the agricultural sector into it. As well, farmers where suspicious of numerous government related activities; seeing them as methods in which the government could punish producers. Some foresee a true sustainable steady state economy that may be very different from today's: greatly reduced energy usage, minimal ecological footprint , fewer consumer packaged goods , local purchasing with short food supply chains , little processed foods , more home and community gardens , etc.

Precision Agriculture: A step towards a more sustainable agriculture
As in California, agriculture in the United States is dominated by large, specialised crop and animal farms that focus on short-term productivity, often at the cost of creating other environmental problems, as well as public health issues. Increasingly, there is recognition that societies need to work towards an agriculture that is greener, cleaner, and provides better quality, more nutritious food that not only feeds people but improves their diet. This is not a new idea, rather one that has been ignored in our impatient, on-demand society, as well as one that has had to compete against a food and diet industry valued at 66 billion dollars in the U.
Measuring agricultural sustainability forces us to go beyond productivity only and include other dimensions, like the environmental, but also the social dimension.
